Urenco commits to tackling global challenges with the Group of Vienna

Today, Urenco has joined the United Nations International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and a dozen leading nuclear industry companies in founding the Group of Vienna. The Group’s mission is to accelerate and enlarge the contribution of nuclear technologies to meeting environmental, social, and economic goals and to improve the health and well-being of people.

Through annual roundtable meetings, the Group of Vienna will provide a platform for dialogue on how the nuclear industry can address some of the world’s biggest problems. Climate change, food security, cancer treatment, water management and plastic pollution are just a few of the challenges that can be supported by nuclear techniques.

Boris Schucht, Urenco’s CEO, said: “Nuclear power and technologies play an important role in tackling climate change and solving other problems within society such as treating serious illnesses; helping to achieve a safer and healthier world.

“Nuclear is a significant source of clean energy, providing one third of all low carbon electricity. It perfectly complements the energy generated from renewables. Nuclear can also play a significant role in the production of hydrogen. These three technologies are the future of energy provision and together they are the solution for a Net Zero world. In addition, due to its versatility, nuclear can be used for other applications, including medical, providing cost-efficient solutions that change lives.

“We are proud to be a member of the Group of Vienna and to continue to advocate for nuclear power and the valuable role it plays in a greener, healthier, more sustainable global future.”
